Are Veneers Permanent?

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers are a popular choice for those looking to improve the appearance of their teeth and many patients want to know if they are permanent. In this blog, we’ll discuss the durability and longevity of veneers and what you can expect from this popular cosmetic dental procedure.

But first, let's understand the basics of veneers.

What are Veneers and What’s the Process Like?

Also known as dental laminates, veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from porcelain or composite resin. These shells are designed to cover your teeth' surface, effectively improving their appearance and giving you a beautiful, radiant smile.

What’s the process like?

The process of placing veneers is typically done in two appointments:

During the first appointment, the dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel, usually 0.5 mm in thickness, from the surface of the tooth or teeth that are getting veneers. They’ll then take images of your teeth impressions and send them off to a dental lab where the veneer(s) will be made.

Once this is done, they’ll give you a temporary set of veneers that you’ll be using as you wait for the permanent veneers.

After 2-3 weeks you’ll be called back for your second appointment, where your temporaries will be removed, your teeth cleaned and the permanent veneers will be bonded. You’ll then be sent home to enjoy a beautiful smile.

So, How Permanent Are Veneers?

Veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. However, this will depend on a few factors, including:

The Skill and Experience of the Dentist

Some dentists are more experienced and skilled than others, and this can have a direct impact on the longevity of your veneers.

A skilled and experienced dentist will create veneers that will fit your teeth perfectly without the need for adjustment. They’ll also bond the veneers securely, ensuring that they’ll last as long as possible.

The Material Used

Compared to resin veneers, porcelain veneers are more resistant to stains and can mimic the natural translucency of teeth. This makes them a more durable and longer-lasting option.

Regular Check-Ups

How often you visit your dentist for checkups also plays a role in the longevity of your veneers. We recommend biannual dental appointments as they’ll allow your dentist to check for any signs of damage or wear, and address any issues before they become more serious.

Your Diet

The food and drinks you consume also affect the veneers’ permanency. If you consume foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acid, your veneers will erode which will expose you to tooth decay and other dental problems. It's important to limit your consumption of these types of foods and drinks and to brush your teeth immediately after eating or drinking.

Hopefully, we've answered your question and given you a better understanding of how permanent veneers are and what factors affect their longevity.
